After my Sunday morning drawing adventure with the kids, I got inspired to share some cool info about Deep Work vs Shallow Work with you guys šŸ˜€

The story began with my youngest daughter Sine asking me to draw this entire puzzle on a massive A2 paper šŸ˜²

I said OK let's go, but I soon found out with the kids chatting in my ear and asking questions, this was quite a task!

I had to block out the chatter and also teach the girls about focus and distractions in a fun way when they were asking me 1000 questions while drawing šŸ˜€šŸ˜€šŸ˜€

When I was done, I thought "This is actually incredible Pool training!"

It immediately brought me back to Cal Newport's awesome book "Deep Work", and the difference of Deep vs Shallow Work.

Deep Work: "Activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your brain capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill and are hard to replicate."

And now the opposite:

Shallow Work:" Non-brain demanding, easy tasks, often performed while distracted. These efforts tend to not create new value in the world and are easy to replicate

Well, take an honest look at yourself and see which of the these two you are most engaged with.....Deep or Shallow?

Do you feel you could be more productive? Do you feel in Pool you could be better? Do you feel distracted easily??

High quality work = Time spent x intensity of focus

Do you think Efren Reyes was showing up at a Pool Table with a candy bar in his mouth, hitting a few balls while checking his notifications on his phone????!!!! No, the man was intensely focussed on every part of the game!! That's why he produced!! šŸ’ŖšŸ»šŸ’ŖšŸ»šŸ˜€šŸ˜€

So in this era where distractions are almost inevitable and almost just accepted as normal....what can we do to focus better and be more productive??

Here's a massive tip: "Create time blocks of Deep Work"

As Cal advices: " To produce at your peak level, you need to work for extended periods with full concentration on a single task free from distraction"

So put in another way when practicing for example: Put your phone on flight mode or turn it off/ practice for 1 hour to 90min and then take a 10 min break. Then if you have more time, repeat the process. That is a monster Deep Workout compared to hitting a few balls, checking your phone every 5 min, chatting with people. That will harm your game more then make it better.

And one final word of advice for those 10 min: "Embrace the Boredom!!"šŸ˜€

I try to tell this to my kids every time they say "I'm bored". That's the greatest moment you can have. Your brain can chill out, recover, reflect, recharge and come back stronger.šŸ˜€šŸ˜€

So start choosing Deep Work over Shallow Work and you will be amazed how much of your true potential will come to the surface!!
